Comparativa de plataformas para Tiendas Online, Woocommerce vs Magento vs Shopify vs Prestashop
A medida que se ha desarrollado la internet los productos y servicios han venido migrando desde las tiendas físicas a las tiendas digitales o tiendas online, como se conocen popularmente, y es que ya podemos decir, que se conocen común o popularmente porque prácticamente todo el mundo, y al decir todo el mundo estamos abarcando el ámbito correcto, ya que en el planeta existen más dispositivos móviles activos que habitantes vivos, por lo cual, en algún momento en las últimas dos décadas los poseedores de un dispositivo móvil o un ordenador de escritorio han accedido a una tienda online.
Es posible que para adquirir sus dispositivos de hardware lo hicieran a través de una tienda online como Amazon, Ebay o alguna local cercana a su domicilio y recibirla en vía delivery.
En la actualidad hay decenas de plataformas de e-commerce, y con el auge del Open Source o Software Libre este tipo de administradores de contenidos web o CMS (Content Management System de acuerdo a sus siglas en inglés) se han vuelto muy conocidos y utilizados.
Si bien el 65% de las páginas web activas a nivel mundial están basadas en WordPress, no implica que este porcentaje sea una tienda online, que en su mayoría si el CMS es WordPress la tienda obviamente sería establecida en Woocommerce, aunque existen muchas soluciones de e-commerce para WordPress, Woocommerce es el preferido.
Aproximándonos al porcentaje de uso tenemos que Woocommerce representa el 27% de la cuota del mercado muy por delante de Shopify que alcanza un 21% (Enero 2022) lo que significa que ambas plataformas poseen la mitad del mercado un 48%, es importante recalcar que del primer millón de páginas en el ranking de Alexa (próximo a desactivarse), alrededor de 290mil utilizan Woocommerce como plataforma de comercio electrónico.
Requerimientos antes de empezar
En este mismo orden ideas, al requerir un CMS para e-commerce debemos plantearnos lo siguiente:
Escalabilidad: Super importante que el CMS se permite a si mismo crecer al mismo ritmo que crece el negocio.
Accesibilidad: Debe tener una interface intuitiva y accesible tanto para administradores del sitio como para usuarios o clientes del sitio, y eso pasa por estar dispuesto para accesibilidad a usuarios con pocos conocimientos de programación, tanto de uno como del otro lado del panel administrativo del sitio.
SEO Friendly: Muy importante en la actualidad ya que un sitio que no esté bien valorado por las Cores Vitals de Google no se posicionará de forma orgánica, por lo que deberás invertir buena cantidad de dinero en publicidad para obtener tráfico de pago.
Seguridad: Este apartado ha cobrado mucha fuerza los últimos años simplemente porque a medida que el CMS sea popular y/o altamente usado es proporcionalmente objeto de ataques cibernéticos.

Afinando nuestra dirección hacia la elección de un CMS para tienda online, tenemos que el ranking por mayor uso o presencia de tiendas activas es el siguiente:
- Woocommerce: basado en WordPress, Woocommerce o Woo como se le conoce popularmente es un plugin o complemente de WordPress muy avanzado que transforma el Framework de WordPress en un sistema de comercio electrónico completo en todos los sentidos y de paso es Software Libre, alcanza el 27% de la torta del mercado en lo referente a tiendas online activas a nivel mundial. Dentro de las grandes características de Woocommerce confirmamos que posee gran posibilidad de escalabilidad como indicamos arriba, aun así puede correr rápidamente en sitios muy grandes y ejecutarse de cara al usuario con gran accesibilidad, un ejemplo de ello lo podemos ver en Avera.
- Shopify: Una plataforma muy distinta tanto en el lenguaje de programación como el modelo de negocios. Shopify es un SAAS , software como servicio, lo que significa que toda tienda creada con Shopify funciona en los servidores de Shopify y se dispone de la misma pagando una renta o alquiler mensual por los servicios. De acuerdo al plan se pueden acceder de forma progresiva a más opciones y se pueden contratar opciones de terceros que se alquilan en el Marketplace interno de Shopify instalándose con un par de clics en su mayoría. - Magento: Una plataforma creada con software libre y basada en el conocido lenguaje PHP, en su versión comunitaria simplemente al instalarse se disponen de grande posibilidades y herramientas para instalar una tienda online altamente poderosa y configurable, la curva de aprendizaje puede ser empinada pero al tener el control el resto es pan comido, podemos crear bloques para el modelo de plantillas y un gran etcétera.
- Prestashop: Otra plataforma libre, que podemos modificar a nuestro gusto, ya que si queremos crear nuestro diseño personalizado lo podemos hacer sin problemas, algunos de los CMS nombrados son un poco complicados para esto, pero prestashop es tal vez mas “entendible” para muchos.

Woocommerce sigue punteando como el CMS para tiendas online preferido por su gran escalabilidad, accesibilidad, seo friendly y seguridad, aun cuando es utilizado en un self-hosted que en la práctica es la gran mayoría de las instalaciones activas, ya que es conocido que la empresa creadora de WordPress y ahora propietaria de Woocommerce, Automaticc ofrece el servicio de instalaciones WordPress y Woocommerce en sus servidores de WordPress.com.
Por años hemos utilizado Woorcommerce y la rapidez como se ejecuta respecto al resto de los CMS competidores es claramente una de las características que mas valoramos, además de su alta capacidad de personalización, no así CMS SAAS cómo Shopify que si bien se ofrecen como amigables y accesible terminan siendo frustrante estar de manos atadas cuando se requiere una función nueva y que no se disponga de ella por falta de oferta en su markeplace.
